Google Pay for kids

What if it was for kids?

Overview.

Google Pay for kids could be a tool for teaching children about financial literacy and responsible money management. Parents could set up an account for their child, load it with money, and allow the child to make payments and track their spending. It could also include educational resources or features to help children learn about money and financial concepts. I did this project as a part of my recruitment process in Flyfin AI which got me recruited there. 😎

Research.

I read few research papers on children and their experiences with money, it became clear that there are several challenges that children face when it comes to managing their finances. These issues range from understanding the value of money and how to budget, to making informed decisions about how to spend or save their funds.

These are the research papers I went through :-

📄Spendthrifts and Tightwads in Childhood: Feelings about Spending Predict Children's Financial Decision Making

📄Teaching Children About Money: Prospective Parenting Ideas ...

As we work on designing a version of Google Pay specifically for kids, it is important that we take these challenges into consideration in order to create a user-friendly and effective tool for young people to manage their money.

Market Research

I went through some apps that were doing well in same field to identify patterns and catalog their offerings to users.

Ideation.

After identifying specific problems, I brainstormed and merged various ideas to create comprehensive solutions. I used crazy 8s technique to imagine the situation and context while ideating.

Assumptions

Before going further I assumed the following things :-

🤔 Target Audience: 10-18 year old.
🤔 They use smartphones and have a personal or linked bank account.
🤔 Source of money: Pocket money.
🤔 This app will teach healthy financial habits to kids.
🤔 Will save them from daily life fraud.

How Might We (HMW)

I devised a number of HMW questions and discussed it with few people to think those ideas aloud.

Wireframes

Using the HMW questions, I sketched initial designs on paper

Making it alive.

Visual Guidelines

I used material design guidelines with few tweaks to improve the overall look and feel. Google’s design language is minimal. To make it child friendly I played around with some components. I used superellipse instead of normal rectangles for buttons and input fields.

High Fidelity

After I was clear with my ideation and research. It was time to create the final screens in high fidelity.
